After you have a coherent manuscript, you’ll need it polished. This is when you can look into line or copy editing, where the emphasis will be on basic linguistic understanding, grammatical structure, capitalization consistency, word choice, and layout for dialog, as well typo correction. This copy editing process usually includes a first pass, and then a second pass to check that corrections were made and to resolve any queries for the writer.
I take a practical and flexible approach to editing and proofreading. I’m not a stickler for rules for the sake of rules, but a respecter of style, whether it’s corporate or publisher style or personal writing style. The idea is to make the reading experience as seamless as possible.
To see a sampling of individual books and other materials I’ve copy edited or proofread, head over to my Edited and Proofed Portfolio page.
Other editors and proofreaders on my serious respect list include:
- Katherine O’Moore-Klopf of KOK Edit (USA)
- Sue Gaines (USA)
- Louise Harnby (UK)
- Sara Donaldson of Northern Editorial (UK)
